About ursodeoxycholic acid: drug class and approved uses
Ursodeoxycholic acid, also called ursodiol, is a naturally occurring hydrophilic bile acid. It replaces more toxic bile acids in the bile, protects liver cells and the bile ducts, and reduces the cholesterol content of bile.
It is approved for primary biliary cholangitis (formerly primary biliary cirrhosis) and for dissolving small, non-calcified cholesterol gallstones in patients with a functioning gallbladder who cannot or do not want to have surgery. In the United States it is also approved to prevent gallstones during rapid weight loss, and in some countries for hepatobiliary disorders in cystic fibrosis in children. Originator brands include Actigall, Urso and Ursofalk.
