About zoledronic acid: drug class and approved uses
Zoledronic acid is a nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate given by intravenous infusion. It binds strongly to bone and inhibits osteoclasts, the cells that resorb bone.
Zoledronic acid is supplied as two different products. The 5mg in 100ml infusion (originator brand Aclasta, Reclast in the US) is approved for osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and in men, including glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis, and for Paget's disease of bone. The 4mg infusion (Zometa) is approved for hypercalcaemia of malignancy and for preventing skeletal-related events in patients with multiple myeloma and bone metastases from solid tumours.
The two strengths are used by different specialists and are not interchangeable, so state which you need. Kidney function is checked before each infusion, and dental health is reviewed before starting treatment, because of the rare risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw. Denosumab and ibandronic acid are also in our catalog. Zoledronic acid infusions are kept at room temperature and ship without a cold chain.
Zoledronic Acid is a prescription medicine, and whether it is suitable for a patient is a decision for the treating doctor. This page describes the medicine for trade buyers; it is not medical advice.
